Car recognition, rally

The Car/Rally algorithm identifies teams based on the number displayed on their vehicle, without relying on a bib number worn by the drivers.

💡 This article explains how the algorithm works and how to configure it. To find out when to select it during import, see the article “Steps for importing photos”.

How the algorithm works #

On each photo, Sportpxl detects the number displayed on the vehicle — door, bonnet, roof or side panel — and associates it with a team. The propagation logic is identical to other algorithms: a number correctly identified on one photo is automatically propagated to all photos where the same number appears in the album.

Typical use cases

  • Motor rally
  • Hill climb
  • Endurance and circuit racing
  • Karting with visible numbering on the vehicle
  • Any motor vehicle event with identification numbers on the bodywork

Configure the algorithm #

When importing, select the “Car” algorithm and enter the following parameters:

Minimum bib number / Maximum bib number Define the range of valid numbers for the event to avoid accidentally reading other numbers present in the scene (road numbers, advertisements, number plates).

Number format Specify whether numbers are numeric only or alphanumeric.

Words or numbers to exclude List recurring text on vehicles that does not correspond to a crew number — for example, a recurring sponsor number or year.

Best practices for taking photographs #

  • Prefer front or three-quarter front angles where the main number is visible.
  • The number is often displayed on several sides of the vehicle — the driver's side and bonnet are usually the most legible.
  • Avoid photographs taken from behind or at a steep angle that obscure the numbering areas.
  • On rallies with special stages, the start and finish phases offer the best conditions for visibility.

💡 Number plates can sometimes be read as numbers. If this leads to false identifications, add the numbers concerned to the words to be excluded during import.
